     Mammoth Cave Kentucky

By Kati

In order to put a state sticker on our RV map we need to stay the night in a state, or do something really cool in the state. We did the coolest thing in Kentucky to earn our state sticker. We visited the Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. It was a beautiful drive through the country to get there. Once you were at the visitor center you rode a bus to the cave. This was an old school bus painted green. The boys were so excited because it was their first time on a school bus.

Once we were at the cave the Ranger explained to us that third is the longest cave system in the world. If you were to combine the 2nd and 3rd largest caves together they would still be more than 100 miles short of the distance covered by this cave system which is currently over 300 miles in length. It has a great covering of sandstone and limestone that has prevented the water from entering into the system which has helped to keep it as one long continuous cave system instead of a bunch of small caves. The stalactites and stalagmites were awesome.

We loved the walk down to the bottom of the Frozen Niagara Falls. They are named this simply because the look like Niagara falls.

The kids were fascinated at how the formations were so different all around.

The coolest part about the caves is that the cave was used to help slaves escape the south. There were several entrances that were used to transport people throughout the caves. We learned about several ways that people were able to communicate secretly to each other. Our favorite was telling stories and warning each other through quilts.

If you are in the area defiantly check out Mammoth Cave! It was so awesome.
